Twee updatjes:
WERK:
The opposition CNRP rejected the election results announced by the NEC yesterday morning. CNRP vice-president Kem Sokha said the announcement is against the will of the people who demand justice. He warned that the NEC would be solely responsible for any mass protests. NEC secretary general Tep Nytha defended the NEC had waited for both parties to find a resolution, but there was no success. According to CNRP spokesman Yim Sovann, the party had collected roughly 10,000 instances of irregularities which would be submitted only after the joint-committee was formed.
King Norodom Sihamoni left the country yesterday for medical check-up in China and passed a number of the monarchy’s constitutional powers including those pertaining to the transition period after elections to Senate President and CPP leader Chea Sim. Under the constitution, it is the King who calls the first meeting of the newly formed National Assembly, which is to take place no more than 60 days after the election. The King’s adviser, Prince Sisowath Sirirath, estimated that Sihamoni would return in 10 to 14 days, but that the timeframe “depends on the Chinese doctor”.
More than 20 heavily armed vehicles including at least 16 tanks were seen transported from Sihanouk ville Autonomous Port to Phnom Penh on National Road 4 around 4pm yesterday. Defense Minister Tea Banh said that truckloads of tanks and mounted rocket launchers would be used to protect the country. “They will be used to crack down on anyone who tries to destroy the nation,” he said. A source with knowledge of the shipment said more than 80 tanks and APCs, and about 100 containers of bullets and mortar shells were shipped from an Eastern European country. The vehicles arrived Wednesday morning and had been transported from the port since, the source said.
CNRP president Sam Rainsy arrived in Cambodia this morning and was welcome by some 500 party members and supporters. Responding to reporters at the airport, Mr. Rainsy stood firmly by his party’s stance to organize a mass demonstration against the NEC’s preliminary results of the July 28th poll, but he didn’t say when. “We will wait and see how the NEC resolves our complaints before a mass demonstration will take place,” he said.
Opposition CNRP representative Kouy Bunroeun walked out from a complaints hearing session in Kratie province and accused the director of the NEC’s operations department, Heu Rong, of using incorrect forms to verify complaints. Mr. Bunroeun claimed that officials were using unsealed 1102 forms to investigate the complaints from Kratie province. Mr. Rong explained the 1102 forms had been collected from the Provincial Election Committee, though those ones were not placed in a sealed box.
Factories and garment workers’ unions yesterday said in some cases almost 80 percent of workers had left their jobs to go back to provinces in fear of social unrest, as the opposition warned to stage a demonstration. Jill Tucker, chief technical adviser for the ILO’s Better Factories Cambodia program, also confirmed that 30 to 40 percent of workers in two factories they visited yesterday came to collect their pay checks this week and did not return to work.
